After a 17–7 loss to No. 3 Vanderbilt last week, Missouri found itself in another blowout game on Sunday. This time, though, the Tigers were on top with a 10–1 win over No. 15 Arkansas.
Missouri won two of its three weekend games against the Razorbacks, improving the team’s record to 17-13 and 2-7 in the Southeastern Conference.
The Tigers struck in the fourth inning. Freshman Connor Brumfield got the action started with a walk. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior shortstop Ryan Howard drove him in with a single, and senior first baseman Zach Lavy followed with a triple to make the score 2–0.
Sophomore Trey Harris singled in Lavy, and a double from sophomore Shane Benes increased the lead to four runs.
The Razorbacks scored in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to three runs. Redshirt freshman Darien Simms drove in junior Austin Catron with a one-out grounder.
The Tigers broke the game open in the top of the eighth. Missouri loaded the bases with one out, and freshman Ian Nelson brought a run home with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Kirby McGuire, a transfer from McLennan Community College, hit his first home run as a Tiger to make the score 8–1.
In the ninth inning, Missouri extended the lead to nine runs. Lavy singled in a run and Howard scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman Michael Plassmeyer started the game for the Tigers, throwing 3 ⅔ innings of scoreless baseball to pick up the win. He struck out five batters and walked only one. Sophomore Cole Bartlett and Brian Sharp relieved Plassmeyer, holding the Razorbacks to only one run in the last 5 ⅓ inning.
The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday against Southern Illinois University Carbondale in Columbia.
