In another rivalry matchup between Missouri and Kansas, the Tigers (11-7-2) fell to the Jayhawks (11-5-4) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Lawrence, Kansas, 1-0. Kansas junior Lois Heuchan scored 40 seconds into double overtime to end Missouri’s season and propel the Jayhawks into the next round of the tournament.

Mizzou failed to score for the second straight game, ending the year on a three-game skid.

What was the biggest difference between the last three games and the rest of the year? Kansas was able to match Mizzou’s pressure defensively and prevent Mizzou from outshooting them.

In the first and second halves, neither team could take control of the game; it was a constant back and forth with both teams failing to create consistent opportunities to score.

Both Kansas and Mizzou were strong on defense, creating a choppy game. However, the goalies still saw action. Mizzou’s Kelsey Dossey and Kansas’ Regan Gibbs both had three saves on the game.

Offensively, the Tigers consistently outshot opponents all season but at times struggled to put the ball in the back of the net. Sunday’s game was different; Kansas outshot Mizzou 17-14.

Kansas held SEC Freshman of the Year and Mizzou leading goal scorer Sarah Luebbert to only two shots. Mizzou had 12 corner kicks, but only had three shots on goal and failed to convert. It was Mizzou’s seventh time being shut out this season.

With the way the defenses were playing, Mizzou looked like it was headed for its second straight game decided by penalty kicks. Then, Kansas sophomore Grace Hagan crossed the ball right into the penalty box behind Mizzou’s defense to Heuchan. Dossey was left helpless as Heuchan blasted the ball past her into the right corner of the goal, ending Mizzou’s season.

Kansas will play North Carolina in the second round Friday in Chapel Hill.
