If you have a soft spot for old-school hip-hop and bands with eccentric names, then Rose Music Hall is the place to be this Tuesday night. Magic City Hippies, a band that began on the streets of Miami, will be serenading fans in CoMo.

Their musical style is described as “indie funk dusted with a taste of Hip Hop, and baked in an oven of Soul” on the band’s Facebook page. So it is safe to say that Magic City Hippies have a versatile sound that could attract a fanbase with a variety of musical tastes.

The band originally began as a one-man show that performed for passers-by in Miami’s party district. However, despite the fact that he was playing for small tips on the streets, frontman Robby Hunter had star quality that did not go unnoticed. After several months of attracting large flocks of people with his electronic, tropical-inspired tracks, he was asked by the Coconut Grove Police to either “play in a real bar,” or get lost; his large audiences were causing too much of a commotion.

After Hunter took the cops’ first suggestion and started to play at a nearby dive, he met his two other bandmates, Pat Howard and John Coughlin. The band’s first LP in 2013 was produced under the name Robby Hunter Band, with the LP itself titled _Magic City Hippies_.

However, once the band started to gain attention in the media and honed their electronic-beach style, they decided that Magic City Hippies was a more fitting name for their unique sound.

Magic City Hippies’ latest piece, a full-length album released this fall, is titled _HUSH_. The band has been touring since fall 2016, and has even opened for the well-known indie rock band Hippo Campus. The band will continue to play in venues across the continental U.S. until June, when they are scheduled to play at Bonnaroo.

The band’s sound resembles that of Cherub and Glass Animals, and the raspy vocals and deep baselines twist their electronic beats into more subdued, head-bobbing beats than the typical fast-paced, dance music you hear from other popular electronic bands. In other words, Magic City Hippies makes you want to cruise with the sunroof down on a warm and sunny day as opposed to get down at a club or sprint miles on the treadmill at the Rec.

With the good vibes and eclectic tones that exude through each of Magic City Hippies’ tracks, it’s no wonder that the band became successful, just like it was at its inception in Miami ― a city iconic for offering both an urban jungle and a tropical escape.

As the weather starts to warm up in CoMo this week, it seems as if Magic City Hippies will bring the sunshine and beachy vibes with them.
