The Columbia Police Department and the MU Police Department located and detained the subject behind an active shooter threat off campus at 12:53 p.m. MU officials confirm the subject is in custody and no longer a threat to campus safety.

MUPD released its initial alert at 11:23 a.m, informing those near campus of an active threat near Hitt Street and Locust Street. Around the same time, all residence halls were placed under a code red securing procedure.

MU Alert released a more detailed report at 11:30 a.m. saying that Columbia police were investigating a possibly suicidal female who was seen carrying a handgun and last seen headed east on Locust Street, away from campus. The subject was described as a black female wearing a Mizzou hoodie with brown pants and flip-flops.

No further details on the subject’s appearance or location were released until 11:38 a.m., when MU Alert reported that she was possibly seen near Memorial Union. In a tweet, MU Alert warned individuals to avoid the area and for those who were there to seek shelter inside nearby buildings.

Those already inside surrounding buildings, such as Memorial Union and the Student Success Center, were advised to stay in place until they received further information on the developing situation.

MU Alert later reported that the subject’s location had changed, and it was believed that she was near the MU Chemistry Building. At 12:08 p.m, it was confirmed that the subject was in the White Campus area and Columbia police and MUPD were actively searching for her. White Campus is the colloquial term for the section of the MU campus behind Memorial Union, which consists of primarily white limestone buildings.

Local law enforcement were able to track her exact location through her cell phone. At this time, the subject was further described as 5-foot-4, roughly 120 pounds and in her mid- to late-20s.

Given the active search, MUPD recommended that the campus community avoid the White Campus area and to only call if there was an emergency, as it was “working hard to confirm facts and maintain the safety of the campus.”

Because of the prolonged search for the subject, MU Alert issued a campus-wide statement advising the public to either avoid campus entirely or to take shelter in a secured location if they were on campus. This statement was released at 12:44 p.m., roughly an hour after the subject was reported to be in the White Campus area.

After the subject was detained by law enforcement this afternoon, the campus community received an update at 12:53 p.m. declaring the situation all clear and that campus would be operating under normal conditions for the remainder of the day.

There was no official campus-wide lockdown issued.

In response to the events that unfolded this afternoon, MU Chancellor Alexander Cartwright released a statement commending local law enforcement for their “professional and swift attention” and encouraging every person in the campus community to sign up for MU Alerts.
