Columbia resident Daniel Northington Hughes, 28, will appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 1:30 p.m. on charges of sexual misconduct in the first degree. His case will be presided over by Judge Kimberly Shaw of the Division 5 Courtroom.

The alleged incident happened on Friday, Sept. 14 at 3:30 p.m. in Ellis Library, where Hughes is reported to have approached a person, to have pulled down his pants, and to have begun masturbating. According to the person’s report, Hughes left the scene after they told him to stop and while they were getting ready to leave.

Hughes was arrested by the MU Police Department on Sunday, Sept.16 at around 9:10 p.m.

This is Hughes’s first charge of sexual misconduct, although he has a history with the criminal justice system. In the 13th Circuit, Hughes has been found guilty of charges including receiving stolen property, burglary in the second degree and stealing $750 or more.

Hughes is currently in custody at the Boone County Jail, with his bond set at $5,000. In Hughes’s arraignment, he pled not guilty.

Since his current arrest, new charges have been filed. Hughes now has an additional court date with the charge of failure to abide judicial order set for Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 1:30 p.m., which was originally scheduled on Monday, Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. For this charge, Hughes’s bond is set at $75,000. This case will be presided over by Judge Jeff Harris of the Division 2 Courtroom.

This hearing is for a probation violation in connection with Hughes’s prior charge of stealing $750 or more. When this case was decided in June, Hughes was given a Suspended Execution of Sentence, where he was placed on five years of probation with a three-year incarceration period in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
