An MU student has contracted active tuberculosis, Gary Ward, MU interim vice chancellor for student affairs announced in an email Monday. The student has left the campus voluntarily, according to the email.

Health officials from Student Health and University Physicians are working with Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services in order to identify other individuals who might need testing, according to the email.

Individuals at the highest risk of infection will be advised to get tested. Testing can be done at the Student Health Center, University Hospital or the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that is spread through the air. Tuberculosis is not spread through physical contact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Symptoms include a bad cough lasting three weeks or more, chest pain and coughing up blood and phlegm, according to the CDC.

MU will be providing periodic updates, according to the email.
