St. Louis singer-songwriter Cara Louise has been singing for as long as she can remember. In October 2019 she released her first EP, “Fragile Heart,” which combines indie rock, ‘60s pop, alternative and country sounds. She will perform in Columbia at the True/False Film Fest on Thursday, March 5th.
Louise’s music isn’t something that can be categorized into one genre, because she is always experimenting with different sounds and tones. She wants to rely on all her influences and all different genres in order to create something unique and original.
MU freshman Delaney Ehrhardt, said Louise’s music isn’t like anything she has heard before.
“I like the old school kinda country twang she has. She has a unique sound that makes her a distinct artist,” Ehrhardt said.
Another MU freshman, Jack McGrath, agrees with Ehrhardt.
“She has an interesting tone of voice which makes it a unique listen. Her music also incorporates many instruments and it made her have an original sound,” McGrath said.
Getting to this EP was, “one of the best times of my life,” Louise said. Along with Adam Donald, her husband and guitarist, and her producer, David Beeman, she went into making this EP full throttle. The group took ideas that Louise had for years and reworked them to make something new and interesting. It took almost half a year, but they are proud of what came out of their hard work.
Louise is looking forward to performing at True/False, as she feels like True/False stands out from other festivals.
Louise said listening to her live is a different experience than simply listening to her work on Spotify because there is a lot of production on her EP. She believes that her group does a good job translating her music into an exciting live performance.
“That’s my favorite thing to do, to see how the music is translating to the audience, and we want to be a part of that with you,” Louise said.
Columbia is a city full of storytellers. Whether it’s journalism, music or art, Louise encourages others to continue to tell stories.
“The best thing in life is to tell a story because it brings us all a little closer,” Louise said. “It helps us all understand each other, so keep telling the truth. Keep finding the story because it is everywhere you look.”
Louise will perform at Cafe Berlin Thursday night for True/False. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 online and $10 at the door.
