The new year is often a time to make changes for the months to come. MU has many opportunities for students to start living a healthy lifestyle, save money for the future and make long-lasting friendships.
The Student Recreation Complex is a great place to start getting in shape for the new year. Complete with weight rooms, multi-sport courts, swimming pools and running tracks, MizzouRec can help students explore their interests and find a healthy activity they love.
MizzouRec offers a litany of classes throughout the week, including yoga, cycling, ballet and Zumba. Go to the MizzouRec website for class descriptions, registration and building hours.
For students looking to make more money in the new year, MU can help with that too. The Career Center helps students update their resumes, apply for jobs and plan for their future.
Amanda Nell, Senior Coordinator of Student Services, said the Center can help students in every part of their career journey, whether they are deciding on their major or discovering a new career path. Nell’s advice for any student looking for a job this year is to look carefully at what a potential employer might ask of them.
“When you are looking through the job description, carefully read through what you might want to apply for,” Nell said. “What are the duties like? What are the wages? What kind of schedule or any other expectations may they have?”
For students who want to find a job or need counseling advice, all information can be found on the Career Center website. Students can drop into a Zoom appointment with a career counselor Monday through Friday. Any MU student is encouraged to search the free employment website Hire Mizzou Tigers for job listings.
Students can also join a free Canvas course in which information on campus employment is shared regularly.
“We demystify the hiring process and make sure students are ready to go, so there is not a delay in getting hired,” Nell said. “It is really good, practical information that is very specific to campus employment.”
Students who want to find new friends — or simply want to get out of their dorms and talk to someone in the new year — can refer to the Involvement Ambassadors for help. The Ambassadors are a group of active students who provide consultation for students who do not yet know what MU offers.
Brooke Lincoln, incoming president of Involvement Ambassadors, said the best way to make friends is to explore new opportunities.
“I think trying new things could be a good foundation because often when you do those things you meet people who have similar interests or who are also trying new things and wanting to branch out,” Lincoln said.
Meeting a friend or finding an interesting organization might happen when you least expect it. MU Engage is a one-stop shop for all events on campus. Coming up in late January and into February are trivia nights, art showcases, Bible studies and club meetings, to name a few.
