Apps on computers and phones can be extremely helpful for a variety of tasks. There are several that every MU student should have on their phone, for example, “Canvas,” but there are other helpful apps you may not know about. Some can help you with classes and work, while others are simply for fun and hobbies. Here is a list of several apps recommended by fellow students:
- Notion – This organization app allows you to make pages, manage documents and take notes from classes. You can keep a journal, embed links to videos and even bookmark outside websites. The possibilities are endless with Notion, and it can be used for almost anything you desire. The app is phone and computer compatible. Although it can be very confusing to navigate the program at first, once you get the hang of its capabilities, it can be a fun and creative way to stay organized.
- Sticky Notes – Sticky Notes is very simple. It is exactly what you’d expect. The computer app allows you to have a Post-it-style sticky note on your desktop that you can type notes and reminders on. The notes are a great way to quickly jot down something you don’t want to forget without having to get out a piece of paper or a planner.
- Locket – Keep in contact with friends and family by taking photos throughout the day and sending it to the Locket widget. The photos you share will show up on every member of your group’s home screens. Kind of like a locket necklace, this app allows you to see your friends even while apart. The app is only available on iPhones.
- Buddy: Budget & Save Money – This app allows you to make different accounts and track all your expenses. You can categorize your spending by groceries, bills, gifts, entertainment and school, along with making your own personalized categories. Buddy also has a function that allows you to share budgeting accounts. You can see an overview of your past expenses at any time.
- Letterboxd – One of my most-used apps, Letterboxd is a movie tracking app where you can review movies and follow friends to see what they’re watching. On the app you can make lists of favorites, keep a movie diary and rate movies. The app also showcases links to articles and reviews about new and popular movies. At the end of each year, you can look back at all the films you watched throughout the months and do it all over again the next year.
- Gymshark Training – If you are a beginner at weight training or just need exercise routines to follow, this app is for you. Gymshark Training gives you planned exercises and can show how to do them correctly through videos and pictures. If you are hesitant to go to the MizzouRec because you don’t know exercising techniques, try this app to get started.
- Sleep Cycle – On Sleep Cycle, you can keep track of how long you sleep and set alarms to help you wake up easier and slowly rather than abruptly. The app can also record any sleep talking, snoring and REM cycles for your own amusement.
- Calm – Calm has daily meditations with a variety of time lengths. If you need to increase your focus while studying or just want to relax before going to sleep, the app has natural sounds and calm music you can listen to for free.
- Goodreads – If you think books are better than the movies, track books you have read and want to read through Goodreads. You can view what percentage of the way you are through a book and set yearly reading goals. Goodreads also allows you to follow friends to view their lists and see what they are currently reading.
- Nostalgic Apps (For fun!) – This last section is not one app, but multiple. I asked several students to share their favorite childhood games they still play today. These games are a way for these students to take a break from coursework by enjoying some stress-free fun. Common games include:
- Temple Run
- Pocket Frogs
- Jetpack Joyride
- DragonVale
- My Singing Monsters
- Crossy Road
- Subway surfers
- Hay Day
- Fruit Ninja
Whether you need a fun new app, a way to better organize or help with sleep, hopefully these apps can assist in making your life a little bit easier and stress free.
