The Tigers lost to the Cougars in a comeback effort

Just days after a sweep of the No. 25 Florida Gators, Missouri baseball dropped a shocker to the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars at Taylor Stadium, 5-4.

Sophomore infielder Brock Daniels put the first run on the scoreboard, flying one out to second base but scoring graduate infielder Matt Garcia at the same time.

Junior outfielder Lucas Spence kicked off the scoring for the Cougars in the fifth inning, scoring two baserunners with a hit to center field. Sophomore infielder Chase Bloomer singled, scoring Spence and giving the Cougars a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers headed into the bottom of the sixth inning trailing 4-1, seemingly needing a heroic effort to get back ahead. Daniels stepped up and drilled a single to the left side of the field, scoring Garcia and freshman catcher Mateo Serna. Daniels went 1-for-3 with three RBIs on the day.

Now trailing 4-3 with two outs, sophomore outfielder Jackson Beaman evened out the score, with a single to center field. Beaman brought Daniels to home plate while also advancing sophomore outfielder Jeric Curtis to second. Beaman finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI.

With the score tied in the top of the seventh inning, sophomore infielder Ethan Willoughby singled to center field, bringing freshman Ryan Niedzwiedz home and giving SIUE a 5-4 lead. The Tigers only mustered one hit from Serna after losing the lead, falling to the Cougars and snapping a five-game winning streak.

Missouri senior pitcher Daniel Wissler got the start, pitching the first five innings with four strikeouts, allowing six hits and three runs. Junior Victor Quinn stepped in after Wissler allowed the three runs, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing the final two runs while recording one strikeout.

Freshman Charlie Miller and Senior Ian Lohse each pitched one inning of their own to finish the game, not allowing any runs or hits.

With this surprise defeat, Missouri drops to 15-19, the worst record in the SEC.
