Earlier this week, the Missouri State Senate confirmed Pam Henrickson as a new member of the UM System Board of Curators. Henrickson was chosen by Gov. Jay Nixon last August to be part of the Board of Curators and went through the appointment process this January.

Henrickson was originally appointed in January 2011 but was withdrawn by Gov. Nixon before the appointment process was completed.

“(Henrickson) was appointed a while ago,” Student Curator Lauren Confer said. “She had been withdrawn from the possible candidates right before her confirmation hearing. Since then, she has been reappointed by Gov. Nixon and going through the process all over again. If she hadn’t been approved by the end of the day on January 31, she could not have been appointed again.”

A prospective board member must be appointed by the state governor. Following the appointment, the candidate must be recommended by his or her legislator and undergo a confirmation hearing before the term is set to begin.

Reasons for Henrickson’s previous withdrawal are unknown.

“It wasn’t a political reason for the withdrawal,” Confer said. “(Henrickson) most likely had to withdraw before her hearing in order to be reappointed and go through the entire process over again in the correct timing in order to start her term at the appropriate time.”

Fellow board member Craig Van Matre has faced similar controversy as Henrickson this week regarding his confirmation.

The Missouri Senate must confirm Matre in order for him to retain his rights as a voting member on the Board of Curators. Matre’s hearing will occur next week.

Henrickson will start her term this month and will serve the designated six years reserved for every board member position.
