Nicole Lardner breaks down her favorite fashion trends of the summer and how to style them.

Hey Miz! Your favorite fashion student is back for another year of answering your fashion questions! Today I want to discuss the best fashion trends of summer 2023. Just because I wasn’t at school doesn’t mean I wasn’t thinking about fashion. So without further ado, here are my favorite fashion trends of the summer.
Long Denim Shorts
One of the biggest trends of this summer was denim shorts. But these are not your mother’s daisy dukes. These denim shorts are marginally longer and baggier, creating a more boyish silhouette. I was an early skeptic of these denim shorts, or “jorts,” but they have won me over! These shorts can be styled numerous ways, making it an amazingly versatile piece. If you’re interested in wearing these shorts, try to pair them with a tight fitting tank or tee and sneakers.
Cowboy Boots
This summer I’ve seen cowboy boots absolutely everywhere. While these western-inspired boots have been slowly increasing in popularity the past couple of years, they truly hit their peak this summer. No matter where I looked, whether it was New York, St. Louis or Los Angeles, cowboy boots were everywhere. These boots are frankly easy to style – you can just wear them how you would usually wear any other pair of boots. My favorite way to style them for the summer is with a skirt. A skirt often adds a nice feminine juxtaposition to the sometimes masculine cowboy boots. These boots are a great way to shake up your summer shoe game!
Ballet Flats
On the other end of the footwear spectrum, ballet flats have made a big resurgence this summer. While the classic black flat has always been somewhat in style, many designers have been pushing the envelope with this classic shoe. One example of this new, creative style of flat that has been huge this summer is the metallic ballet flat. Often found in silver or gold, these flats are reinventing the flat. While flats are a versatile shoe, it can be tricky to style them for the summer. An easy way to style these shoes is to pair them with other classic pieces, such as denim and a plain white tee. If you want to style a metallic pair of flats, match your shoes to your jewelry. This will make your outfit put classic and out styles together.
Oversized Sunglasses
While tiny sunglasses have been all the rage the past couple of years, oversized sunglasses are creeping back into popularity. These early 2000s inspired lenses are often rectangular, and come in a wide variety of different maximalist colors like hot pink, bright blue or neon orange. These sunglasses are best styled with other early 2000s inspired pieces, such as baby tees or low rise jeans.
