Mizzou softball finished its home invitational with mixed results, splitting games across two days at Mizzou Softball Stadium. The Tigers opened the weekend with a run-rule win over Wichita State before dropping both matchups against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks. They closed the invitational with a five-inning rout of the Drake Bulldogs, showing flashes of offensive firepower and strong pitching despite the uneven results.
The highlight of the weekend came in Mizzou’s home opener, when the Tigers erupted for 12 runs en route to a mercy rule victory over Wichita State. After falling behind early, Mizzou’s offense came alive in the middle innings and never looked back. A pair of two-run home runs flipped momentum in the fourth inning, and the Tigers continued to pile it on with timely extra-base hits and productive at-bats with runners on base. The final blow came in the sixth, when Mizzou strung together clutch hits to put the game out of reach early.
Several Tigers stood out offensively in the win. Sophomore infielder Sophie Smith drove in a season-high three runs, including a key home run that gave Mizzou its first lead of the game. Freshman first baseman Sidney Forrester also had a breakout performance, collecting three hits, one beinga two-run homer to help stretch the lead. The Tigers’ lineup stayed aggressive throughout the game, capitalizing on mistakes and keeping pressure on Wichita State’s pitching staff.
The Tigers couldn’t carry that momentum into their first matchup against Miami (Ohio), falling 5-1. The Redhawks built an early cushion with power at the plate, and Mizzou struggled to generate consistent offense in response. Forrester accounted for the Tigers’ lone run with an RBI single, while freshman outfielder Linny Ramsey recorded her first collegiate hit. Despite solid moments in the circle and a late defensive stand to keep the score within reach, Mizzou couldn’t find the big hit it needed to climb back into the game.
Saturday brought a bounce-back performance against Drake, as Mizzou rolled to a 10-2 victory in five innings. The Tigers jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring multiple runs in the first two frames and never allowing Drake to settle in.
The offense was balanced throughout the lineup, with RBIs coming from several players as Mizzou quickly built a commanding lead. In the circle, junior pitcher Marissa McCann delivered a standout outing, striking out a career-high 12 batters and recording seven straight strikeouts at one point.
Mizzou closed the invitational with another loss to Miami (Ohio), 8-2, as the Redhawks once again delivered home runs to create separation. Ramsey provided a bright spot by hitting her first career home run, while sophomore infielder Madison Uptegrove added a sacrifice fly, but Miami’s power proved too much to overcome. The Tigers had a final chance with the bases loaded late in the game, but couldn’t capitalize.
With the final day of the tournament canceled due to weather, Mizzou now turns its attention to Southeastern Conference play. The Tigers will travel to Gainesville, Florida on March 7, to open conference competition against the Florida Gators, looking to build on the offensive sparks and pitching performances they showed at home.
