Green papers litter the laps of audience members within the well-loved True/False Film Fest game show, Gimme Truth! Printed on the paper is a list of films followed by two boxes labeled “true” and “false.”
Held at The Blue Note on March 7, Gimme Truth! audience members filed into the venue, filling it with laughter and an inquisitive quirk. Gimme Truth! is all about riddling out if the storylines presented were true or false.
As each quick film was presented, the audience was hushed, focused on the witty two-minute clip. After the films rolled, the interviewee from each film was invited onstage to answer questions posed by three judges, each of whom were directors debuting at T/F.
Throughout the judging, host and comedian Brian Babylon encouraged the audience’s boisterous reactions.
Putting his improv to the test, third-place contestant Luke Holden shared awell-constructed lie with the audience.
“I was just, like, immediately so drawn to this because I love to make my own videos and little movies that are just stupid and dumb — like, that’s what this was,” Holden said. “And I love to make people laugh, and I’m really good at lying.”
After submitting an assignment for her filmmaking class, second-place contestant Avery McDonald was proud of the work she contributed to this event.
“I’m very happy with what I did,” McDonald said. “I put a lot of hard work into it. It took a lot of editing, and it’s a bunch of stuff that I had just learned in those first couple of weeks of the first semester.”
After the final film rolled, audiences erupted into chaos as they got to judge the last two films on their own. Snickering among themselves, the audience scanned a QR code to submit their guesses, with audience members who guessed correctly getting entered into a raffle for a pair of tickets to Gimme Truth! 2027. To fill the lull, Babylon broke out into stand-up comedy.
This easygoing event allowed festivalgoers to share their experiences from the first three days of the fest, chat with others as passionate about the arts as they are and laugh with one another. The atmosphere of this event left audience members with memorable stories that can only be obtained by participating in Gimme Truth!
