Missouri baseball suffered its fifth straight loss Tuesday, falling 11-8 to Kansas. An eight-run fourth inning wasn’t enough as the Tigers lost in front of a record crowd.
The Tigers scored all of their runs in an action-packed fourth inning. Freshman catcher Juliomar Campos hit a deep shot to right center – his first home run of the season – to put Mizzou on the board.
A walk and two singles brought up junior center fielder Kaden Peer, who drove in two runs to bring Mizzou within two. A base-clearing triple by freshman second baseman Blaize Ward gave the Tigers a 7-6 lead.
A Taylor Stadium record 3,207 fans rose to their feet as the Tigers had climbed back from down six runs. Redshirt freshman Donovan Jordan added to the surge with an RBI double down the right field line to drive in an eighth run in the fourth inning.
Despite the offensive explosion, Mizzou only managed one hit for the rest of the game.
Starting pitcher PJ Green struggled early, allowing five hits and four earned runs while facing 16 batters.
Kansas started hot, jumping out to a 4-0 lead through the first three innings. Relief pitcher Jackson Sobel came into the game in the middle of the third and was pulled after a two-run home run increased the Jayhawk lead to six.
The rest of the bullpen wasn’t much help, allowing a decisive four-run eighth inning that put the game out of reach. Graduate student Kadden Drew earned his first loss of the season after giving up a three-run home run in the eighth.
Mizzou got two batters on base with walks in the ninth, but after a Donovan Jordan groundout, the Tigers had lost their fifth in a row.
Missouri baseball hopes to bounce back in a three-game away series vs No. 24 Kentucky April 3-5.
