Mizzou baseball lost all three games to South Carolina this week, falling to 3-12 in conference play.
Game one
Mizzou began its home series with a 5-1 loss Thursday night. Despite a strong pitching performance from junior Josh McDevitt, the Tigers’ offense only managed two hits, both coming from graduate Pierre Seals.
Mizzou’s lone run was thanks to a groundout to second base by graduate Jase Woita that allowed Seals to score a run. Woita recorded his team-leading 35th RBI of the season.
McDevitt struck out eight batters in the seven innings he pitched.
Mizzou’s offense was lackluster , going without a hit in the final five innings.
Game two
The second game of the series was a classic pitching duel. Both starting pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts. Mizzou’s offense struggled once again, ending the game scoreless, falling 1-0.
Sophomore pitcher Brady Kehlenbrink picked up the loss, despite striking out 10 batters and allowing only two hits. The only run of the game came after a throwing error by junior shortstop Kam Durnin.
Mizzou had a chance to win in the bottom of the ninth. Star freshman Blaize Ward led off the inning with a single to shallow left field. Durnin followed with a bunt, putting the game-tying run in scoring position. Redshirt senior Isaiah Frost was caught stealing as the first out after coming in as a pinch runner for Ward. A strikeout and a flyout ended the game at 1-0.
Game three
The final game of the series was also the highest-scoring one. Despite a two-run ninth inning, South Carolina completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory.
Woita began Mizzou’s scoring with a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his seventh of the season. That was the Tigers’ only hit until the bottom of the ninth. Three hits in the final inning weren’t enough for Mizzou to get back in the game.
Starting pitcher Sam Rosand faced just thirteen batters, as Mizzou relied on the bullpen all game. All five pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and allowed 11 hits, including four home runs.
Mizzou falls to 20-17 on the year, 3-12 in Southeastern Conference play. The Tigers will next face Missouri State at 6:30 p.m. on the road Wednesday.
