Mizzou baseball was swept by No. 14 Oklahoma this weekend, extending its losing streak to six. The Tigers continue to struggle against conference opponents, falling to 3-15 in Southeastern Conference play.
Game one – Oklahoma 9, Mizzou 6
Graduate infielder Jase Woita put the team on his back Friday night, as the first baseman went 3-for-4 with two home runs. Mizzou scored six runs, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Sooners.
Oklahoma got the game rolling in the bottom of the second inning, scoring on an RBI single off the bat of junior Deiten Lachance. The Sooners ended the inning up 4-0.
The Tigers struck back in the fourth inning, as Woita hit his first home run of the game, followed by a two-run homer in the fifth inning hit by freshman Blaize Ward.
The Sooners responded with four runs of their own in the seventh inning, going up 9-3. This was their last scoring inning of the night, as they took advantage of poor Tiger pitching and tallied four home runs as a team.
The Tigers scored late thanks to an RBI single from junior Kam Durnin and Woita’s second home run of the night. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be enough to overcome the run deficit, as Mizzou lost 9-6.
Game two – Oklahoma 4, Mizzou 0
Sophomore Brady Kehlenbrink pitched six innings for the Tigers and tallied 10 strikeouts. His dominant performance on the mound wasn’t enough to earn a win, as Kehlenbrink received no run support.
Oklahoma held the Tigers’ offense to just two hits all game. Junior Mateo Serna singled to right field in the top of the second inning, and Durnin hit one into left field for a base hit in the sixth.
Oklahoma took game two 4-0.
Though he took the loss, Kehlenbrink was the most notable Tiger on the field Saturday and now leads all Mizzou pitchers in strikeouts with 69 on the season.
Game three – Oklahoma 8, Mizzou 4
Mizzou struggled to put anything on the board until the seventh inning, when Durnin piped a ball into center field for his fourth home run of the season. The late rally was not enough, however, as the Tigers lost to Oklahoma, dropping their sixth game in a row.
The Oklahoma offensive onslaught began in the second inning after junior Brendan Brock homered to center field. Brock’s home run kick-started the Sooners’ offense, and Oklahoma left the second inning up 4-0.
The Sooners scored four more runs in the fourth inning, extending their lead to eight.
Durnin had a solo home run in the seventh inning to get the Tigers on the board, followed by a two-RBI single in the eighth from Ward. Junior Eric Maisonet then singled through the right side in the ninth to score a run. However, the late offensive surge was not enough, as Mizzou fell to Oklahoma 8-4.
The Tigers are now .500 on the season. Their next matchup is against SIU Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Stadium.
