Mizzou baseball was swept by No. 5 Georgia this weekend, falling to 4-20 in Southeastern Conference play. The Tigers were outscored 31-7 and sit last in the SEC standings.
Game one – Georgia 4, Mizzou 0
The Tigers’ offense struggled to get going in game one. In the low-scoring matchup, Georgia broke through in the fifth inning, while Mizzou continued to come up with nothing.
One positive for Mizzou was holding the SEC’s best team to four runs. This can largely be attributed to junior Josh McDevitt, who started on the mound for the Tigers.
McDevitt pitched 6 ⅓ innings and struck out six Bulldogs, marking his 10th start with six or more strikeouts. Though the Tigers have struggled, McDevitt has solidified himself as a legitimate starter in the SEC.
However, fantastic pitching was not enough to pull out a win in game one, as Mizzou lost 4-0.
Game two – Georgia 13, Mizzou 3
Mizzou baseball hit an impressive three home runs in the second game of the series, but it was not enough to hold off the Georgia offense.
Sophomore Brady Kehlenbrink started on the mound for Mizzou, pitching four innings and recording six strikeouts.
While Georgia got off to a hot start, the Tigers’ offense started slow in game two, not scoring until the fifth inning when junior Kam Durnin hit a solo home run to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to three.
Redshirt freshman Donovan Jordan and graduate Jase Woita added solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings. However, these would be the Tigers’ only scores of the game, as they were overwhelmed by Georgia hitters and dropped game two in eight innings, 13-3.
Game three – Georgia 14, Mizzou 4
Durnin continued his strong weekend on Sunday, as he hit his second and third home runs of the series.
However, his efforts would be in vain as once the Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning, they didn’t stop until the seventh, totaling four home runs as a team.
The Tigers used five pitchers, none of whom pitched more than 2 ⅓ innings.
The Mizzou offense scored two runs in the fourth inning on a Durnin home run, followed by an RBI single by Jordan.
Durnin would send a ball out of the park again for a solo shot in the sixth inning, followed by a Woita RBI double in the seventh. Unfortunately for the Tigers, their offense was once again not enough to slow down the Bulldogs.
Mizzou lost game three 14-4 and was swept by Georgia. The Tigers’ next matchup is against Vanderbilt at 6 p.m. Friday at Taylor Stadium.
