Back in January of 2000, when MU launched its fundraising campaign, “For All We Call Mizzou,” then-Chancellor Emeritus Richard Wallace set a goal for $600 million in donations.

That goal was passed, and after eight years, the program finished with more than $1 billion dollars raised.

Though administrators were satisfied with the end result, the university was struggling to keep pace with the rate at which other major universities were receiving donations at the time. Before the campaign, donations often only numbered in the thousands or tens-of-thousands.

Since then, gifts have been given in millions.

This year was no exception. The “Black and Gold” racked some serious green.

**1.** In November, the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation gave MU the largest endowment gift in university history. The foundation [donated $30.1 million](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2012/11/9/reynolds-journalism-institute-guaranteed-funding-t/) to ensure permanent funding for the Reynolds Journalism Institute, which focuses on new methods and models of journalism.

**2.** The University of Missouri Health System [received a $13.3 million award](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2012/7/10/mu-health-system-awarded-133-million-help-aid-pati/) from the Health Care Innovation Awards given by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in July. The money is meant for the system to better its primary care for patients who have Medicare and Medicaid, and it allowed for the creation of the three-year “Leveraging Information Technology to Guide High Tech High Touch Care,” program, which includes training in advanced health information technology, evidence-based treatment planning and a specialized workforce to coordinate better care.

**3.** The athletics department [received an $8.3 million gift](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2013/1/29/Deaton032/) from Don Walsworth, CEO of Walsworth Publishing Company and former chairman of the UM System Board of Curators, in January. The gift was given to help the department fulfill its needs as a new member of the Southeastern Conference. The funding went to renovations to Memorial Stadium, a new clubhouse, housing, coaches’ offices, team locker rooms, indoor heated hitting bays and the latest swing instruction technology for the men’s and women’s golf teams.

**4.** The College of Veterinary Medicine [received more than $5 million](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2013/2/12/fox-family-donates-5-million-gift-mu-college-veter/) from donors Kay and Cottrell Fox in February. The gift allowed the college to conduct advanced comparative oncology research and companion animal medical care. The Fox’s 13-year-old English Springer Spaniel, Molokai, had previously been treated for bone cancer by the college using a drug developed by MU researchers.

**5.** Stefan Sarafianos, a professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immumology, [was given a $3.4 million grant](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2013/3/5/mu-professor-awarded-34-million-grant-research-hiv/) in March to fund his work developing a chemical inhibitor to target the HIV enzyme Rnase H, which allows the virus to grow through DNA replication. The professor has studied the virus for 20 years, and his drug, EFda, is designed to prevent the virus from copying itself. The drug is currently undergoing clinical trials.
