Robin Thicke’s new album _Blurred Lines_ is full of ‘70s-inspired tunes, ill-written lyrics and an overall intimidating feel. Keep in mind that the lyrics on this album have been described as “rape-y.”
Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the listen, but the whole time I felt as though Thicke himself was in my bedroom, trying to seduce me. In some of his songs, such as the widely popular title track featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams, it’s easy to not notice lines such as, “The way you grab me, must wanna get nasty” because of the upbeat, retro sound. But it doesn’t stop there.
In “Give It 2 U,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, Thicke goes for a more straightforward approach by crooning that he’s got a “big dick for you.” (Future pickup line, anyone?) Now, maybe it’s just me overreacting, but this seems a little much. If he wasn’t so good-looking, perhaps people wouldn’t be so willing to slip him a free pass for this lewdness.
Throughout the album, I didn’t find the lyrics to be challenging in the slightest. My 14-year-old brother could have come up with most of them. That said, the tunes are all very catchy. I like the retro sound going on, and it’s later mixed up with the more modern techno of “Give It 2 U.”
Overall, this album was not what I expected after the release of the “Blurred Lines” single. I had high hopes. This album is worth the listen if you liked his first hits, but it’s not the sexy, mature Robin Thicke I know and love. The grammatically incorrect song titles coupled with sexual lyrics almost reminiscent of high school were not appreciated. If you’re looking for a sex playlist though, you may have just met your match.
