Add9, an all-male a cappella group, added four new members Aug. 29.

Add9 was started in 2004 by a group of men in the University Singers ensemble who wanted to sing more popular, modern songs rather than classical songs.

The group has performed for many occasions, including men’s basketball games, in Lowry Mall for Family Weekend and in Speakers Circle.

“You can find us pretty much anywhere,” said senior Ben Worley, Add9 president and music director.

Add9 singers have a diverse group of majors, from vocal music and music education to engineering, computer science, journalism, fashion and many others, Worley said.

He said the group hopes to attract all kinds of singers.

“It would definitely be awesome to have someone like Robin Thicke or Justin Timberlake become a part of the group, but really we’re just looking for some guys with a positive, great attitude and a great voice,” Worley said.

On Aug. 27 and 29, Add9 hosted auditions to recruit the newest members of the group.

During auditions, veteran members such as vice president Jayme Becker and treasurer Stephen Lanza, judged the prospective members.

The first audition was held in Leadership Auditorium. Most of the incoming members who auditioned expressed their nerves and lack of confidence.

“My excitement overshadowed my nerves, and I was able to do better because of that,” freshman David Roth said.

During round two, a select few men who auditioned were called back to sing in a more rehearsal-like atmosphere.

“I definitely loved callbacks more than the first audition,” freshman Andrew Fansher said.

Many others said they felt the same way since they could really get a feel of just how fun it feels to rehearse with Add9.

The new members were announced the same night as callbacks. The new members included freshman Stephen Daw (of the Maneater staff), sophomore Jake Gipple, Fansher and Roth.

All the members said they felt relieved and grateful to have been selected to be a part of Add9.

“It feels great to be a part of such a great, goofy, relaxed group of guys, and I can’t wait to add some spunk and arrangements to the group,” Gipple said.

The new members heard about Add9 in various ways.

Daw said he wanted to be in an a cappella group ever since grade school and just simply asked his adviser and people around campus what was available.

Fansher and Roth, both music majors, were required to go to an event hosted by the music department in which Worley spoke about Add9 and the audition process.

Gipple said he was too busy his freshman year to join. After becoming friends with one of the Add9 members and attending one of their concerts, he refused to let his busy schedule deter him this year.

Each new member said he wanted to bring different things to the group.

“I want to bring a positive attitude to this group, and I’d love to arrange a few songs and be able to perform them for everyone,” Roth said.

Daw said he wanted to add sound to the tenor section of the group.

“I just want to add a great voice, and I’ll do my best to make this an even better group,” Fansher said.
