With spring just around the corner, many of us need to shop for a new spring/summer wardrobe. But living on a college-student budget can leave one questioning if that $15 fedora or $30 blouse is really worth it.

Since Earth Day is next month, it’s also the time to bring awareness to help preserve the Earth and its natural resources. The Environmental Leadership Office has come up with an idea to help solve both of these issues.

The office is having its first Seasonal Clothing Swap event Wednesday. During this event, students can come to Lowry Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and exchange their clothes for gently used, secondhand clothes.

The Seasonal Clothing Swap hopes to attract many participants with its “Swap it Like it’s Hot” catchphrase and, hopefully, beautiful weather. If not, the rain site will be in the MU Student Center, Environmental Leadership Office adviser Amy Eultgen says.

Eultgen says the goal of the Seasonal Clothing Swap event is to promote buying secondhand clothes, encourage others to start their own clothing swap events and inform others about the importance of buying secondhand clothes.

“Each month we have different initiatives or themes that we want to achieve,” Eultgen says. “March is our water theme and we were thinking, ‘What else we could do with clothes?’ A lot of clothing companies contaminate a lot of water supplies which affects not only the marine animal life in that area but also the community surrounding it.”

The amount of clothing you bring to the Seasonal Clothing Swap is the same amount you’re allowed to swap and leave with, Eultgen says.

“We’re going to try to get a diverse range of clothing, and we’re going to have our own makeshift dressing rooms,” Eultgen says. “We’ll also give away reusable bags to help encourage others not to use plastic bags while out shopping.”

So whether you want to update your wardrobe or want to try to be more eco-friendly this year, this event is sure to be rewarding for you and your pocket.
