The 10th annual Pitchfork Music Festival starts in Chicago this weekend, and I’m looking forward to covering my first festival. The lineup this year is an interesting mix of downtempo indie, with acts like Jamie xx, Mac DeMarco and Caribou, and a solid assembly of hip-hop artists including Chance the Rapper and A$AP Ferg.
Thrown into this mix is Sleater-Kinney, the riot grrrl punk band from Washington state. I had the opportunity to shoot their show in Columbia this past April, and I can’t wait to see them again. Their newest album, “Cities to Love,” was absolutely electric and should translate to a festival stage in a really cool way. Unfortunately, Sleater-Kinney will be competing with Vic Mensa for the final act Saturday, and it will be very interesting to see the crowd divide between the two stages.
Chance the Rapper will close out the festival with the final set on Sunday. His latest album with Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment, entitled “Surf,” is amazing. I saw him when he was in Columbia at Jesse Hall in December 2013, and that performance was a little underwhelming. I have extremely high hopes, though, for his show the second time around.
I will be posting recaps and photographs after each day of the three-day festival. From the incredibly upbeat Shamir, to the extremely talented Vince Staples, to the absolutely classic Wilco, I’m looking forward to covering the weekend ahead.
