Sunday night capped off a historic weekend for Missouri swimming.
The Mizzou men’s and women’s teams competed at the three-day Tennessee Invitational over the weekend. The men won the meet and the women finished in a tie for second. At the invitational, Mizzou set 11 new school records.
Junior Michael Chadwick had a dominant meet for Mizzou, earning two individual qualifying times for the NCAA Championships. The U.S. National Team member lowered three of his individual school records: the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. His 100-yard freestyle time of 41.89 is the fastest time by a college swimmer this season. Chadwick qualified for an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships in both the 50 and 100-yard events.
Chadwick was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that set school records and qualified for the NCAA Championships. He was joined on the 200-yard medley team by senior Dillon Love, junior Fabian Schwingenschlogl and junior Andrew Sansoucie. The 400-yard freestyle team consisted of freshman Mikel Schreuders, Chadwick, Sansoucie and Schwingenschlogl.
It only took Schwingenschlogl half a season to etch his name into Mizzou’s record books. The Western Kentucky transfer posted a 51.36 in the 100-yard breaststroke to break Sam Tierney’s record from last season.
Sansoucie had a strong meet for the Tigers over the weekend. The junior posted a time of 46.10 in the 100-yard butterfly, lowering his school record set last season. He also had strong races in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle.
Sansoucie joined junior Carter Griffin, Schwingenschlogl and Chadwick on the 400-yard medley relay that qualified for the NCAA Championships. The Mizzou men also qualified their 200-yard freestyle relay for the NCAA meet in March. The team consisted of Chadwick, Sansoucie, junior Christian Aragona and senior Matthew Margritier.
On the women’s side, sophomore Kira Zubar set two school records over the weekend. In the 500-yard freestyle, Zubar dropped nearly four seconds to break Jill Granger’s mark from 2009. On Sunday, she also broke Granger’s 1650-yard freestyle school record that was set in 2007.
Senior Abby Duncan lowered her school record in the 200-yard breaststroke. She posted a 2:07.02, a best time by nearly a second and a half and a NCAA qualifying time.
Duncan wasn’t the only breaststroker to leave a mark on the record books. Junior Katharine Ross broke her own record in the 100-yard breaststroke, dropping nearly a second in the process. Ross and Duncan both earned NCAA qualifying standards in the 100-yard breaststroke event.
In addition to the strong individual swims at the meet, the Tiger women qualified both the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays for the NCAA Championship meet. Sophomore Hannah Stevens, Duncan, sophomore Erin Metzger-Seymour and senior Anna Patterson made up the 400-yard medley relay team. Nadine Laemmler, Duncan, freshman Maddie Gehrke and Patterson were on the 200-yard medley team.
The Tigers highest diving finish came from sophomore Madeline McKernan. McKernan finished second in platform diving.
The full swimming and diving team returns to action against Louisiana State on Jan. 14 in Baton Rouge.
