The Grammys are known for outlandish red carpet looks. J. Lo in her iconic plunging Versace dress walked the carpet at the 2000 Grammys. Rihanna’s “loofah” gown was one of the more out-there looks of 2015. And who can forget Lady Gaga arriving in an egg to the Grammys in 2011?
But unfortunately, the 2016 Grammys fashion was unusually demure. Taylor Swift wore an ensemble that looked like a variation on the dress she wore last year. The color scheme for the night appeared to be black and white. Even Lady Gaga, in her David Bowie-esque red wig and blue ensemble, seemed tame.
Not to say that I didn’t love some of the looks from the evening. Everyone looked stunning in dresses that I could only dream to pull off, but the Grammys are usually a time for pushing the envelope on the red carpet.
Let’s not dwell on the past though. Now that the 2016 Grammys are over, the 2017 ones are fast approaching, which means another opportunity for life-changing red-carpet style. Here’s a few ideas for some variety and uniqueness in next year’s looks (I’m looking at you T-Swift):
**An outfit made out of recycling**
Let’s make this planet a greener one, shall we? Celebrities could send a message and do some good for the Earth. Advertisers could even take this moment to throw in some product placement. Just imagine Justin Bieber in a very classy Pepsi suit walking down the red carpet in 2017. It’d be sure to get a reaction out of everyone.
**A duct tape dress**
Duck Brand’s scholarship contest has been inspiring prom couples across the country to wear their own duct tape creations on one of the best nights of their high school lives; why not celebrities? J. Lo could recreate the Versace dress with green duct tape. The best part? The duct tape dress could keep itself up without fashion tape. Duct tape: now a fabric and boob holder.
**Plastic wrap**
One of the most well-known stories at my high school was the one about the girl who only wore plastic wrap to school on Halloween. Needless to say, she got sent home, but I really believe it could translate well to the red carpet. Miley Cyrus has already shown up half-naked to award shows; she could really take it to the next level with a plastic wrap dress at the Grammys.
**A dress made out of Kanye’s tweets**
Considering his fashion line is more expensive than necessary, if you want to rep Kanye, the best way to do so is to wear his tweets. Not only will the dress be outlandish and over the top, but the tweets will be too. Really, the only person who would do this though is Kanye. Maybe he can get Kim to do it.
