With the slogan “Mizzou For You,” Everett Bruer and Lexie Cartee are running for Missouri Students Association president and vice president on the premise that MU should be a positive experience for every student.
“A few things that we want to focus on are diversity, academics, sustainability and campus safety,” Bruer said of his and Cartee’s platform. “Making sure that the student government works for students — that’s what I really want to do with it.”
This year marks Bruer’s third in MSA. He has served as academic affairs chairman, was on the Vice Chancellor’s Standing Committee on Academic Assessment and the Student Fee Capital Improvement Committee. He is also a member of Mizzou for Malawi and Delta Tau Delta.
If elected, Bruer said his experiences as Academic Affairs Chairman would serve him well.
“I got to work so much with policy and with students, and I (established) a working relationship with a lot of the administration,” he said. “(I was able) to interact with students, understand what is really important to students and then actually get that done at the administrative level.”
Cartee has been in MSA since her freshman year. She also volunteers for International Student Career Services, is on MU Tour Team and is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.
Bruer’s running mate said she thinks they will be a well-balanced team.
“He has the personality, he’s the thinker,” Cartee said. “He’s the ideas man, I guess you could say. I’m the action person.”
Bruer and Cartee have been meeting with student groups and getting feedback on their platform and policy ideas.
“Something that’s important as my job as a representative is making sure student organizations are well-represented,” Bruer said.
Bruer said one plan to help students involves bringing several academic tools together into one easily accessible website.
“What we’re trying to do is take grade distribution, GPA calculator, course catalog for whatever academic college you’re in and professor review, we’re putting that all together through either our own website or possibly even through, if we could work it out, through MyZou,” he said.
Bruer said he is particularly excited about working on sustainability.
“We’re tying to bring together all the different sustainability groups on campus for a campus-wide sustainability week,” he said.
Campaign Manager Evan Wood said they also hope to improve MU’s Green Report Card score.
Green Report Card is an independent website that grades universities’ administrations, energy policies, food and recycling policies, use of green building and student involvement to compose a letter grade measuring a commitment to sustainability.
“Right now, MU has a B- and we want to get us on track to get an A+ by 2015,” Wood said.
For the vice president, duties rest mainly in budget, Cartee said.
“I’m really excited about seeing where that money is going to go and getting to play a part in allocating that,” she said.
Besides budget, Cartee said she hopes to focus on campus safety.
“I think that’s a big thing on campus,” she said.
Cartee hopes to add language to the M-book dealing with sexual misconduct as a punishable act.
“I’m more of a preventative measure type of person, and I was hoping we could get some kind of promotional (measure and) be promoting the RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) program, for self defense,” she said.
With elections in November and plenty of time for others to announce their candidacy, Bruer said he was looking forward to the coming months.
“I’m really excited about the election, and I’m excited about the potential to represent students to the administration,” he said.
