With the semester just starting, it might seem a little early for a test, or as a former biology teacher likes to call it, “a celebration of knowledge.” For this kind of test no numbers are needed and no pages should be read. Instead, one must know about the stuff [Jean-Luc Godard called](http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/j/jeanlucgo161264.html) “the most beautiful fraud in the world”: cinema.
Ragtag Cinema will be hosting its second Movie Trivia Night on Sunday, Jan. 29 at The Blue Note.
“Last January was our first Movie Trivia Night fundraiser,” Ragtag’s executive director Tracy Lane says. “The response was wonderfully overwhelming. It’s really fun to see the broad array of ages that participate in our events. Quite like our film audiences, it’s a wide swath of Columbia’s population.”
Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the games run from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be food, raffles and a grand prize.
“We had to turn away teams due to limited space in our facility,” Lane says. “This year, we’ve moved our location to The Blue Note in order to accommodate more teams.”
The trivia night was created as a fundraiser for the Digital Projector Fund, which is quickly reaching its goal. This projector will allow Ragtag to provide the best possible picture quality and eventually show things in 3-D. It will also eliminate the need for Ragtag to rent equipment for the True/False Film Festival. Tickets are $25 for single participants and $135 for a team up to six. All single players will be given teams.
The event will be hosted by its creator Jon Westhoff, a Ragtag projectionist who wrote the questions. The information quizzed will range from the beginning of film history to present work in film, and anywhere in between.
“On the creation of this event, I learned about a trivia circuit around Columbia, and Ragtag needed a fundraising event,” Westhoff says. “I had hosted a general trivia night before and had really enjoyed it. This event will bring back some of the favorite categories from last year, general Ragtag trivia and just a smoother process.”
Ragtag expects there to be improvements at this year’s Trivia Night.
“This year, contenders can expect more room to breathe and discuss things with your team members,” Lane says. “We were in very tight quarters last year. Also, this year, Chipotle will be donating dinner to all of our participants. Last year was lots of fun, and I am sure this year will be the same.”
Some of the categories tested are awards, general film trivia, the film community and directors. Most trivia nights include a category in which participants watch parts of films in order to guess their titles. In the Ragtag way, this category is replaced with the Ragtag players, a group that reenacts scenes from movies in ordered to be guessed.
“I really try to have a wide range of questions from different eras and genres,” Westhoff says. “Not just the people who have the same taste in movies as I do will win. Last year was sort of classic films heavy. It is slightly more modern this year and not quite as challenging. There are some real brain buster questions and the event has a nice Ragtag flare to it.”
