For the first few weeks of the spring semester, MU students who took advantage of takeout on weekends had to make a change in their eating habits.
Swiping an ID card and asking for a to-go box became only available during the school week, an inconvenience for students who had used this option at their convenience Saturdays and Sundays during the fall semester.
At the beginning of the spring semester, Campus Dining Services changed the availability of takeout in the dining halls on weekends. For the first five weeks of the semester, the Rollins and Pavilion at Dobbs dining halls stopped providing to-go boxes on the weekends.
“There is not a strong need for this service on weekends when there are no classes,” CDS Marketing Manager Michael Wuest said at the time, according to an earlier Maneater article.
Wuest also said the service was to be used for students who had tight schedules with classes that didn’t allow time to sit down and eat, a feature that he didn’t think was necessary on the weekends when classes are not in session.
CDS recently changed its policy. To-go boxes are once again an option on the weekends in the Rollins and Dobbs dining halls.
“We didn’t realize how much students wanted it,” said Wuest, who helped make the decision about the removal of weekend takeout.
Wuest said CDS met with the Residence Halls Association and was made aware of feedback from students who had previously used the takeout option on weekends and wanted it back.
A previous concern for CDS was the misusage of the takeout privilege. Now, CDS is stepping up its game when it comes to enforcing policies.
“The policies will be better displayed,” Wuest said.
He also said the previously posted rules were hard to read. CDS has decided to post charts for students’ convenience.
According to an earlier Maneater report, the risk of students being dishonest and abusing the system was also a factor in the decision to implement the new policy.
“We also have experiences with students who were asking for carry-out service (receiving a to-go box,) sitting down eating a meal while in the dining facility, then filling up their to-go box and leaving the facility,” Wuest said in a previous Maneater article shortly after the takeout option was taken away. “This was not weekend-specific.”
Wuest also said staff will be keeping a closer eye on those patrons in the dining hall who have a to-go box. Staff will make sure no one sitting down eating at a table has a box, and students with boxes who spend a prolonged amount of time in the dining hall may be charged for two meals rather than one.
Wuest said these policies aren’t new. They are simply being given more attention.
“We’re definitely going to enforce our policies,” Wuest said.
Freshman Hannah McClellan said she was happy to see the option return to campus dining halls.
“It’s convenient,” McClellan said. “Especially on the weekends when you’re tired or working on homework. You can just bring it back to your room and continue what you’re doing.”
