In a Tuesday news release, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., announced the appropriation of $3,587,943 to help the Joplin School District and Mercy Health pay for their temporary locations as they rehabilitate their former permanent locations destroyed by last spring’s severe tornado.
The funding will come from the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.
According to FEMA, $2,387,943 of the Public Assistance Grant funding will cover 75 percent of the costs to renovate the temporary location of Joplin School Districts’ Franklin Technology Center. An additional $1.2 million will pay for 75 percent of an eight-month lease for two mobile operating rooms at Mercy Health.
This is the first federal funding the area has received since January, when the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $45 million in investment funds to help rebuild Joplin and Jasper County, Mo.
“I’ve seen firsthand the recovery efforts underway by the resilient folks in Joplin, and I know these resources will be put to great use as they continue to rebuild,” McCaskill said in a news release. “I plan to keep fighting to ensure that Joplin, and Missourians across the state who are dealing with natural disasters, have the support and the tools necessary to rebuild their homes and businesses.”
