Instead of the usual three flights per day to the Memphis International Airport, Columbia Regional Airport began its morning flights to Atlanta last spring.

Because of the flights’ success rate and Delta’s executive marketing decision, morning flights to and from Memphis, Tenn., will no longer be available starting Friday, Nov. 2.

When these 6:30 a.m. flights resume, they will only be through Atlanta.

Atlanta is one of the nation’s largest airport hubs, and is the largest for Delta Airlines. The airline has routes to 240 cities as well as 60 countries out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

“Although I am not sure if the University of Missouri’s move to the SEC was a deciding factor of changing the flight schedule, it will be much more convenient for traveling to games,” said Steven Sapp, Columbia Public Works Department spokesman.

Freshman Isabelle Marsh can attest to the convenience of the new Atlanta flights. Marsh spent her summer in Columbia and before school started back up she was able to fly home to Atlanta on the new direct service.

“The Columbia airport is so small and allows you to have special treatment,” Marsh said. “It was very nice for me to be able to fly home and not waste time flying through Memphis.”

Delta was not the only airline that saw potential in flying through Columbia. Frontier Airlines will begin sending twice-weekly flights to Orlando, Fla., starting Nov. 20. These flights will only be on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
