During sixth grade, I received my first iPod for Christmas. I didn’t listen to any music at this point in my life, but I knew that the iPod was the hot gift that everyone would be getting that holiday.

For a month, the only songs I had on my iPod were the “High School Musical” soundtrack, Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten,” and Jesse McCartney’s “Beautiful Soul.” But it was McCartney’s catchy, romantic tune that I usually kept on replay.

McCartney’s albums “Beautiful Soul” in 2004, “Right Where You Want Me” in 2006, and “Departure” in 2008 filled the mix CDs that my friends and I exchanged throughout middle school. But as we left our CDs, iPod Nanos and Twilight posters in 2008, we seemed to leave our favorite teenage heartthrob as well.

However after a five-year break between albums, McCartney is back with his fourth studio album, “In Technicolor,” and it’s definitely different than his previous albums. Just as McCartney and his teen audience matured, so has his music.

“In Technicolor” features an ‘80s Michael Jackson-esque disco-pop sound, similar to Justin Timberlake’s “The 20-20 Experience.” The album’s intro, “In Technicolor Part I,” gives off a weird techno-pop vibe, but the album quickly gets back on track with “Back Together.” The song is a nice transition from McCartney’s old music to his new disco sound.

The upbeat tunes like “Young Love,” “Superbad” and “Punch Drunk Recreation,” provide a catchy dance tune, while ballads like “Goodie Bag,” “Tie The Knot” and “The Other Guy,” are sweet and sensual and sure to make you swoon.

The album is different from what you would expect from an ex-teen heartthrob, but McCartney makes it work, and I’m confident that I’ll find myself revisiting the album on more than one occasion.
