The Tigers played a close series, winning 19-17 in the fifth set
Missouri volleyball (15-5, 6-2 SEC) wins against Oklahoma (9-8, 3-6 SEC) in Norman to extend their winning streak to six. The Tigers took the Sooners to five sets to secure the 3-2 win. Jordan Iliff, Mychael Vernon, Janet deMarrais and Regan Haith all reached double digit kills for Missouri’s offense.
Missouri faced an early 7-1 deficit in the first set and was unable to gain an advantage in the set, losing 19-25. The Tigers had 11 kills with 10 errors, resulting in a .031 hitting percentage.
The second set went in Missouri’s favor with a 25-18 win. This was the Tigers’ most efficient set, with a .677 hitting percentage and 21 kills. One match after setting a career high 61 assists, Marina Crownover followed it up with another 60 to lead the Tigers.
The Tigers took control in the third set, winning 25-13. Libero Maya Sands led the defense with 16 digs, while Crownover and Vernon registered in the double-digits as well.
Missouri dropped the fourth set in a neck-and-neck affair. The Tigers lost the set 26-24 after leading 22-17. They had a total of four attacking errors in the final nine Sooner points.
The deciding set went down to the wire, with Missouri ultimately securing the win 19-17 as Crownover served an ace for match point. The Tigers’ duo of deMarrais and Vernon were on point with four kills each to close the match.
Missouri led in kills, assists and digs for the match but had 10 service errors to the Sooners’ five. This match marked the two teams’ first contest since their days as Big 12 rivals in 2011.
Missouri will travel to No. 7 Texas to take on the Longhorns at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. The Tigers and Longhorns both sit at the top of the SEC currently and it will be Crownover’s chance to face off against her former team.
